Today, multiple carriers are requesting lease-able space in property owners' buildings. These carriers ask for connectivity to emergency power and secured access with independent hydro metering. Their wiring requirements affect the building membrane, telco rooms and conduits, and fire code.
Likewise, cellular and satellite providers need rooftop access for the placing of microwave dishes and antennas, and their needs for secure space and independent power metering in the rooftop mechanical rooms are identical to those of carriers in the basement. The weight and proper installation of hardware on the roof dramatically affects the roof membrane.

The needs of all such carriers must be factored early in the design process. As new wireless technology applications move forward and more carriers request space in commercial buildings, more hardware and cable is installed on rooftops, in ceiling spaces, and in data centres.
